Proposed Spay / Neuter Clinic Locations for Los Angeles

Los Angeles County has the most staggering pet overpopulation problem in the country as evidenced by the thousands of companion animals ending up in city, county and private animal shelters annually.

This does not include the animals that are abandoned and left to starve on the streets. The density of the population in the county combined with limited affordable spay/neuter options contribute significantly to this enormous problem.

The high cost of living and the fact that a disproportionately large segment of the population lives below median income compound the problem. There are a number of spay/neuter initiatives currently in operation in Los Angeles but unfortunately there are not enough surgeries being performed to effect a significant reduction in intake.

Shelter statistics show that the needle is moving in the right direction but very slowly.  Intake and euthanasia numbers have dropped a mere 1% over the last three years.

Based on analysis of experiences at various locations, Clinico theorizes that it would take three spay/neuter surgeries per thousand residents for one year to achieve a six percent reduction in shelter intake.  For Los Angeles, that would equate to 30,000 additional surgeries. To effect a 25%  reduction of intake in LA County would require four times that number of surgeries, or 120,000 additional surgeries provided annually on a sustained basis.

Los Angeles Spay / Neuter Clinic Location Selections

Based on demographic research Clinico has selected the following sites for the first three clinics:

Clinic #1 will serve the communities of Huntington Park, Bell, South Gate, Florence/Graham, Cudahy, Walnut Park, Watts, Maywood and parts of neighboring LA City.

Clinic #2 will serve the communities of Baldwin Park, Irwindale, El Monte, South El Monte, Rosemead, and San Gabriel, La Puente, Arcadia and Temple City.

Clinic # 3 will serve the communities of Northridge, North Hills, Van Nuys, Reseda and Winnetka.

In addition to having the required high density of low-income population, the above areas have limited low-cost spay/neuter options, high numbers of animals impounded by local animal shelterslity of life within the community.

Due to their demographic, animal intake, and other characteristics, the following other areas are under consideration for clinics:

• Compton/Carson
• North Central Los Angeles
• Lancaster/Palmdale
• South Los Angeles

More financial support is needed. Please help us ensure that spay/neuter is available to everyone in Los Angeles who needs it.
